A New Hampshire man has been rushed to the hospital after he was shot in the back by his canine companion.

William Rancourt, and his dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer, were on a pheasant hunt on Nov. 29 in Northern Iowa, when his dog stepped on a firearm that was left on the ground.

"Long story short - it was really a freak accident - one of the hunters in the hunting party set his gun down on the ground and one of the dogs in the hunting party just stepped just right, or just wrong, onto the trigger guard of that shotgun, and the gun fired," DNR conservation officer Ken Lonneman told Radio Iowa.

Rancourt, 36, was immediately brought to the Trinity hospital in Fort Dodge with non-life-threatening injuries.
