A couple from Perris, California has been arrested after multiple children had been found shackled and malnourished in their family home.

On Jan. 15, David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, were arrested on torture and child endangerment charges after one of their daughters had escaped her confines and called police from a cellphone she found inside the home.

When authorities met with the girl, they said she looked "slightly emaciated" and only 10 years old. They would later discover she was actually 17.

According to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, when the police arrived on the scene, they found the girl's 12 brothers and sisters, held captive by their parents - and were "shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in dark and foul-smelling surroundings."

It has not been reported how long they had been held in these conditions until they were found.

Sadly, this is not the only astounding news about the children.
